Crime and Punishment is a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a prominent Russian author. Set in 19th-century St. Petersburg, the story revolves around Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished and intellectually gifted former student.
Raskolnikov, driven by his theory of the extraordinary man, believes that some individuals are justified in committing crimes for the greater good. In an attempt to prove his theory, he plans and carries out the murder of a pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna. However, he is tormented by guilt and paranoia following the crime.
